The Most Common Resume Mistakes Are...

  1. Resume Too Long - Stick to the one page rule and carry over to a second page only if your experience warrants it.
  2. Disorganization - Having your facts out of order makes the resume difficult to read.
  3. Misspellings & Typos - Using spell check is vital but not the end all. You must read your resume word for word.
  4. Photos - Unless you are an Actor or Model, pictures should be avoided on a resume.
  5. Fancy Fonts - Stick to simple fonts. Flashy fonts and colors can be distracting.
  6. Accomplishments? - When listing your accomplishments, include the when and where and don’t forget the numbers to prove it.
  7. Omitting Dates - Age is nothing but a number. Age is becoming less significant nowadays with people working well into their 70’s.
  8. Functional Resume - It looks cool, but don’t fall for it. People think you are trying to hide something with this format.
  9. Lies -  With the internet and background checks being more frequent in the hiring process, it is just a matter of time before you are found out. So just be upfront about your skills and history.
  10. Formatting - Many times, formats are lost when submitted electronically. So choose a simple format from the beginning.
